Treating Sludge

Veolia offers reliable waste-to-energy solutions to address both sludge disposal and energy requirements, supporting Hong Kong's transition to zero landfills.
waste to energy sludge

We understand your challenge

  • Lack of land in Hong Kong
  • High waste volume
  • Landfills reaching full capacity
  • Government directions in Waste Blue Print to phase out landfills as a waste management means

Veolia covers the whole sludge value chain through design,  built and operating sewage sludge waste-to-energy plant to provide energy-efficient treatment for the city's sewage sludge.

Sludge Reception

  • Trucks transporting sludge are weighted at the weighbridge before discharging it into an enclosed delivery bay with a deodorisation system. An automated grabber transfers the sludge into hoppers for mixing and pumping into the incinerator.

Fluidised Bed Incineration

  • An efficient combustion technology where the incineration process goes up to 850 degree celcius. The sludge is burnt in a sand bed to effectively reduce the sludge volume and with low production of ashes.

Flue Gas Treatment

  • An effective flue gas cleaning system removes particles and pollutants from flue gas that includes:
Multi-cyclone, Dry reactor, Bag filter to eliminate large and fine particles, and neutralize or capture acidic gases, organic pollutants, heavy metals.
  • A Continuous Emission Monitoring System (CEMS) is in place to ensure the cleaned flue gas complies with strict international emission standards.

Energy Recovery

  • Energy from the sludge combustion is recovered by using incinerators to generate heat, which converts water into high-pressure steam. This steam drives turbines to produce electricity, meeting the facility's energy needs and exporting surplus power to the grid. The process recycles condensed water back to the boilers, enhancing efficiency.
